FORTHCOMING EVENTS
As ever our resident hosts - Tim and Jackie - will be here to welcome new and regular musicians, singers, wordsmiths and audience members alike to the Guildford Institute. We're an acoustic club with a wide ranging taste in music - from folk to blues to contemporary; self-penned or traditional; familiar or obscure. So, if you would like to share your favourite songs, tunes, poems or tales with a very receptive audience - or just want to come along and enjoy yourselves - then roll up to the Guildford Institute on the 12th. You won't be disappointed and you'll definitely be entertained.
Admission costs £3.00 on the door (cash only) to contribute towards the hire of the venue.
Emily and Hazel Askew were regular guests at the Music Institute until the pandemic and their separate musical careers broke the cycle. We are therefore delighted to welcome them back at the club after far too long a break.
The sisters are widely recognised as two of the foremost performers and interpreters of traditional music from England. Their live performances brim with the depth and connection not only of two sisters, but also of two musicians who have been immersed in folk music all their lives. Together, they rework and reinterpret songs and balladry, creating breath-taking arrangements, which allow words that are hundreds of years old to resonate profoundly with contemporary audiences. Alongside this, both women are also skilled multi-instrumentalists and expert players of dance music, using fiddles, melodeons, concertina and cello in their innate drive to bring old dance music to life.
Admission £13.00 (member £12.00) - Tickets must be purchased in advance

Those of you who saw Cohen at the club a couple of years back, either solo or with Granny’s Attic, will agree with The Living Tradition magazine’s description of him as "captivating, bold and striking". He is at the forefront of his generation of English folk musicians as both a powerful and commanding singer and a masterful player of the Anglo concertina and melodeon. His repertoire is rooted in the English folk tradition, celebrating the age-old musical heritage of this broad and diverse land, with a particular interest in the music of the West Midlands, where Cohen spent many of his formative years. Traditional ballads, songs and tunes form the basis of Cohen’s material, but with a smattering of baroque, renaissance, ragtime, and music hall thrown in for good measure. "A passion for traditional songs that evokes Tony Rose and Peter Belamy" Mojo "Brilliant!" The Guardian

This will be Tom’s long overdue second visit to folk club. A charismatic and popular singer and musician, Tom is a 24-year veteran of Her Majesty’s Royal Naval diesel submarines and the chances are that a number of the sea shanties you thought were traditional were in fact written by him. Songs like The Last Shanty (A Sailor Ain't A Sailor), Sailor's Prayer (Send Down A Dove) and Legend (Marching Inland), If you like songs and stories of the sea, new and old, you’ll certainly enjoy an evening in his company and when a performer with such a wealth of chorus songs as Tom meets up with a brilliant chorus singing audience like the Music Institute’s the combination is exhilarating. In addition to his own material, Tom draws on his naval experience to provide authenticity when singing traditional sea songs. Tom’s repertoire, from traditional shanties to songs fashioned out of his own seafaring background, recruits his audience for a voyage by turns reflective, dramatic and humorous, With songs that have become folk standards known and sung wherever great choruses ring out Tom's strong performances engage audiences with the spirit of the sea.
