Music for today ....
.... because of yesterday

A selection of the very best of music and
dance with its roots in the tradition

  • Our next Folk Club gig:
    24th June 2022 - 8.00pm
The Guildford Institute, Ward Street, Guildford GU1 4LH

Martyn needs absolutely no introduction to our folk club audience, or to the wider English folk community. He is one of our best known and respected singers, with a laid-back, hypnotic style which never fails to relax and enthrall his audiences; he is also an acknowledged expert on Australian song.

Martyn is a master craftsman who sings from the heart. He has appeared on over thirty recordings, spread over a period of some 40 years, on the majority of which he has been joined by his accompanist of choice, squeezebox player Iris Bishop. We are delighted to say thast Iris will be providing her understated musical accompaniment to Martyn's sublime voice.

As well as singing songs from the tradition he is also an interpreter of some of the finest contemporary folk songs around, including those by Eric Bogle and Graeme Miles, and usually includes the recitation of a Bush Poem or two in his concerts.

Out of respect to everyone present at the folk club on the night we are also asking all attendees:
    - to have either had three covid vaccinations or had a negative lateral flow test immediately prior to attending;
    - wear masks when moving around the building or going to the bar.

Finally, and most obviously, please do not attend if you show any symptoms of infection (a full refund of the ticket price will be made if the folk club organisers are contacted in advance of the concert).

Admission £13.00 (member £11.00) - Tickets must be purchased in advance

    Our next Come All Ye:
    Come All Ye
    Friday 10th June 2022 - 8.00pm
    Doors open at 7.15pm - music 7:30pm - evening finishes at 10.30pm

Singers, musicians, wordsmiths and audience are once again invited to join us for an evening of good music in good company at our monthly Come All Ye Open Zoom (CAYOZ). We all had a splendid time at May's CAYOZ. The performers were all in fine form and as usual entertained us with an eclectic and enjoyable selection of items ranging from a song from The Copper Family to one from the Kinks; from Lord Franklyn to Lovely Molly; and from The Birds In The Spring to The Night Owl Homeward Turns. All that plus an unforgettable rendition of Les Barker's Detritus.

Our next CAYOZ will be on Friday 10th June and as ever Tim and Lawrence will be hosting the evening and welcoming everyone, performers and audience alike. It's almost as good as the real thing and it's a delight to see a screen full of familiar and new faces and hear some very enjoyable music and stories - you won’t be disappointed and you’ll definitely be entertained. Bring your own drink!

If you're interested in attending please click here to send an e-mail.

    Admission free (obvs)

  • Our previous presentation

    Come All Ye
    Recorded "live" December 2021
    Still available online

In 2019, after 20 years of promoting Maypoles To Mistletoe at the Electric Theatre, the folk club adapted the perennially popular show to fit into the Assembly Room at the Guildford Institute. The show was called Mistletoe Garland and in 2020 we adapted our adaptation to fit into Zoom. The show was streamed "live" a week before Christmas and a recording is still available here.

On Friday 10th December 2021 the cast of Mistletoe Garland were each invited to choose their two favourite songs from the show and were joined by most of our regular Come All Ye Open Zoom (CAYOZ) singers, performing seasonal songs of their choosing, to present Mistletoe CAYOZ. As in previous years we were delighted to be joined by the wonderful Martyn Wyndham-Read to bring you some Christmas cheer and perform some of the finest seasonal songs and tunes around interspersed with anecdotes and poems about traditional customs and folklore. All that plus a Mummers Play! A splendid time was had by all and you can enjoy it here.

Every year show is performed in aid of the charity Maypoles To Mistletoe has supported for decades, St Catherine's Hospice in Crawley. Mistletoe CAYOZ is free to view, but should you wish to make a donation to St Catherine's please visit our 2021 website.

The show is available on YouTube (click here for link).
